Title of the project

Monitoring of Hunted Bean Geese (Anser fabalis)

Description

Data collection about hunted birds concerning specific species.

Results

The results after the analysis of the received photos and using the above mentioned characteristics for distinction are as follows: 2014:
1 taiga bean goose, 32 tundra bean geese.2015: 22 tundra bean geese and 2 greater white-fronted geese.2016: 1 taiga bean goose, 85 tundra bean geese (including 1 with a pink bill), and 1 greater white-fronted goose. In 2017, all 102 photos were of Tundra Beans. Images were obtained from all hunting grounds in Latvia. Thus, there are good reasons to accept them as good representatives of the proportion of Taiga Beans in the hunting bags. These data were used to calculate the number of Taiga Beans in the annual hunting bags for the autumns 2014–2017. The figure of c. 300 for the year 2013 was, in our opinion, no doubt a vast exaggeration due to lack of adequate field data.Goose species and subspecies were identified in the photos by Dr.biol. Dmitry Boiko and Hakon Kampe-Persson (Sweden). Conclusions • In spring, up to at least 2,300 Taiga Bean Geese make short stop-overs in Latvia; up to at least 300 from the central sub-population and up to at least 2,000 from the eastern sub-population. • In autumn, Taiga Bean Geese are hardly ever reported from Latvia. • The annual hunting bag of Taiga Bean Geese in Latvia ranges 10–20 birds.
