Biterne Reserve, France

This hunting and wildlife natural reserve is located in the Loire department in France. The reserve was funded in 1987, lays on 38 ha and is composed by 3 ponds surrounded by grasslands and bocage. It welcomes a wide range of wildlife and mainly waterbird species. This property is owned by the National Foundation for Wildlife Habitats Protection which is a hunters’ foundation and managed by the Loire department Hunting Federation.

The reserve’s objectives are to create a shelter area for birds that are migrating between Northern and Southern Europe. Birds species are monitored, studies are undertaken on some plants and/or animal species and habitat management measures are in place to improve the site capacity for hosting wildlife.
