Title of the project

Pond management in favour of the waterbirds in the Deux-Sévres

The ponds of “JUIGNY” have a vacation fish farming for many years. These ponds with a surface area of 33 hectares, bordered by 6 hectares marshes, are fished annually. Local hunters wanted to make these ponds more attractive for waterbirds by increasing the food opportunities.

After establishing aquatic plants the pond bottom changed. It has more small invertebrates and ponds are becoming more attractive for waterbirds, especially for the Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata) who feeds by probing soft mud for small invertebrates. The Eurasian Curlew is visible in wintering and in reproduction.
