Title of the project
Spanish map of genetic purity of red-legged partridge and introgression of chukar partridge genotypes in Spain
Knowing that there is some hybridization between the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) and the Chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), the aim of the study is to establish the Spanish map of genetic purity of red-legged partridge and to map the characterization and ecotypes of the species.
The project aims to check the health of populations as well as raise awareness of the problem of uncontrolled release of specimens and genetic health.
Awareness campaigns of hunters about the project of establishing the map of genetic purity.
Collecting data and biological sample followed by genetic analysis and geo-referencing results (tongue for DNA extraction and feces for sanitary study).
There were also sex and age identification as well as morphological measurements.
In his last season (date of reporting case study: Feb 2013), it has merged with another project aiming to establish more accurate mating periods, especially depending on the altitude of the terrain and features.
Hunters primarily collaborate by picking up samples during hunting activities and/or by sending them directly. Depending on the sample, qualified staff is necessary to follow a specific protocol.
