Assessment of the population density and trends of Rock Partridge (Alectoris graeca) in relation to year, season, hunting/non-hunting areas and environmental parameters. Line transects were located and counts were realized both during spring and summer, for 7 consequent years. Counts were realized by game keepers with the use of specialized hunting dogs. Habitat types and vegetation (canopy) cover were also recorded. Measures like estimation of the species? population in central Greece and in national level, identification of the limiting factors,… were taken, and conservation measures were proposed: – Cultivations in appropriate areas and abandoned agricultural fields with leguminous plants (Vicia, Lathurus) – Planting of specific tree species in higher altitudes which offer cover from avian predators (Juniperus communis, Pinus leucodermis) – In areas with subterranean bulbs, superficial tillage is suggested to make bulbs easily located by the species – When there is absence of natural water supply and bulbs, artificial water supply is provided – Effective fortification of the above mechanism with the founding and operation of the Game Guard body (2000) of the Hunting Organizations for the increased protection of wildlife – Rock partridge rearing & focused releasing
