The Grgar Hunting Family (LD), under the auspices of the Gorica Hunting Family Association (ZLD), hosted its second youth camp in September. Held at the LD Grgar hunting lodge in Bitež, this two-day camp brought together thirty children from the Gorizia region for an unforgettable experience that combined education, outdoor activities, and wildlife appreciation.
Day 1: Introducing Hunting and Falconry
The camp began with a warm welcome at 9 a.m., where Elder Aleš Širca introduced the young participants to the hunting family and camp rules. LD Grgar members Vojko Sanič and Dušan Čubej provided an engaging introduction to hunting, local game species, and hunting equipment.
The participants enjoyed a delicious venison ragout pasta lunch prepared by Darinka Pirnat and Robert Marinič, followed by an exciting afternoon with falconers from Friuli (Diego and Sofia Bigatton) and the Karst region (Leo Zega). The falconers introduced their birds and demonstrated their skills, showcasing how falconry contributes both professionally and recreationally to hunting traditions.
The day concluded with a visit to ambush sites and feeding stations, where a young bear made a nighttime appearance, delighting everyone. An evening campfire provided the perfect setting for grilled meat, fries, and conversations before resting in tents under the stars.
EU Policy Relevance
The LD Grgar Youth Camp exemplifies how hands-on, community-based initiatives align with the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the Green Deal. By fostering environmental literacy and wildlife appreciation among young participants, the camp supports the EU’s goals of reconnecting people with nature and nurturing a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
Such events also complement the Environmental Action Programme (EAP) by promoting sustainable practices and respect for biodiversity. The camp’s diverse activities underscore the importance of teaching future generations the value of Europe’s natural heritage.
Day 2: Canine Training, Shooting, and Learning
The campers rose early at 5:45 a.m. for a traditional Slovenian breakfast of bread, butter, honey, apples, and tea, prepared by member Valter Kavčič.
The second day was dedicated to service and hunting dogs. A police canine team demonstrated their work and practical training methods, while Filip Pirnat delivered an insightful lecture on hunting canine practices.
After lunch—gnocchi with venison goulash, once again masterfully prepared by Darinka and Robert—the children headed to the shooting range. Under the guidance of Žiga Juretič and Filip Pirnat, participants tried their hand at target shooting with bows and air rifles.
The day concluded with a quiz expertly designed by Vojko Sanič. Every participant excelled, and the event ended with a raffle where all children received awards. This camp ensured the children not only gained a deeper understanding of nature and hunting but also developed respect for wildlife and the environment.
